OUR STORY

IMG_4681.HEIC.HEIC

THIS IS SARASWATI.

She rises before the sun, quietly boiling tea as the village is still hushed in sleep. Her fingers are rough from years of weaving, stitching, carving — the quiet work of creation. In the corner of her home, a wooden loom leans against the mud wall, and wool dyed from marigold and indigo hangs like prayer flags waiting for her hands.

Saraswati does not consider herself an artist. She calls it “just what my mother taught me.” But what she makes — the intricate patterns on a handwoven bag, the fine lines of a carved wooden elephant — carries generations of memory. Her work is patience made visible.

I met Saraswati while walking through a mountain village in Nepal. She offered me tea, then showed me her craft, without fanfare. I remember thinking: "Why is it so difficult for the world to find her?"

I’ve lived in the UK most of my life. I’ve seen shoppers pay hundreds of pounds for “authentic” handcrafts mass-produced in factories. And I’ve met women like Saraswati, whose work is truly authentic, but often unseen.

She is just one of thousands of artisans across Nepal — women with skill, dignity, and stories worth telling. Rooted Treasures was born to be a bridge — between those who create, and those who truly want to receive.
